Should you be thinking about travelling to Australia soon (and i recommend that you do), there are a few things you need to know before visiting this wonderful country.
1 Australia is absolutely huge
With all of the magnificent sights that are on offer in Australia, you are going to want to see as many as possible. But know this: you are not going to see everything. Well, not unless you decide to migrate down under that is. You see, this is one of the largest countries in the world. A flight from Brisbane to Perth will take you just over 5 hours, so this isn’t a route for a road trip. And if you were thinking of taking the car to Melbourne from Sydney, know that it takes over 9 hours. You’re going to need a longer stay if you are intent on exploring everything that Australia has to offer!
2 Australia can be expensive
This isn’t the cheapest place to visit. With the cost of travel, fuel expenses, and holiday accommodation to consider, you are going to need a pretty deep pocket. There are ways to cut costs, however. Budget flights such as Jetstar are cheaper than their larger counterparts. You can buy bus passes to get from city to city (cheaper than individual travel prices). And these amazing serviced apartments in Canberra are more affordable than some of the hotels you will find, although you might also consider renting a campervan, or staying in an Airbnb.
3 It’s scorching!
In Australia, the sun is hot! Yes, we know the sun is hot everywhere, but it blazes strongest here than in many other parts of the world. Statistically, South Eastern Queensland is known to have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, so trust us, you don’t want to forget your sun creams. Don’t be fooled by the seasons, either. This is the other side of the hemisphere, so the summer months are between December to February and winter is June to August. While most of Australia is hot all year round, there are places that are colder than most, and heavy rainfall is common. So, whenever you are deciding to visit, we recommend you check this weather guide before packing your suitcases!
4 You might annoy the locals
While people in Australia are generally very friendly(i’m dating one, i would know), there are still ways you can annoy them. Stereotyped phrases, such as ‘G’day mate’ or ‘let’s throw a shrimp on the barbie.’ don’t always go down well. And on that point, Australians are not always throwing shrimps on the barbie either. Instead they may be eating Emu or Witchetty grubs. The foodie possibilities are endless!
5 You will never want to leave
Despite being at risk of annoying the odd local or two, and despite the chances of getting caught out by the weather, you will love Australia. With lush rainforests, sun-glazed beaches, many places of natural beauty, and not forgetting koalas, kangaroos, and the rest of the country’s fantastic wildlife, you really will be glad you came. Perhaps you should think about migrating after all!
Have you visited Australia? If so, let me know if there is anything you think people should know about this great country. And if you are planning a visit, we hope you have a great time. Unlike their famous boomerangs, you probably won’t be returning home anytime soon!
