I am back again with another dining experience with a difference(see previous post on Dans le Noir, London), this time I am focusing on the very popular Cabbages & Condoms(C&C) in Bangkok’s Sukumvit area(what a name, eh??). Yes a quirky name like this is bound to catch everyone’s attention. This restaurant promotes a better understanding of family planning and safe sex in an unusual and fun way and has got so many condoms in the one room, its mind boggling. There is multi coloured condoms literally everywhere, condom light shades, flower arrangements and lots of mannequins draped in condoms. Even Santa is there, covered head to toe in rubber.
The food here is Thai style and really tasty and thankfully quite inexpensive. Me and Emma came here on a weekend trip to Bangkok only a few weeks back and booked ahead as I assumed that this restaurant would be very busy on weekends. It was busy(naturally) but you can just walk in also. The menu has lots of selection, so if you’re a picky one like me, there will be lots of dishes to suit your taste. Soups, salads, vegetarian dishes, curries, noodles and of course its not Thai unless there is a mountain of rice options(sticky rice, dark rice, red jasmine rice- who knew rice came in such variety). We shared the Som Tum thai(papaya salad) and rice for 150 baht. For dessert, I had the fresh seasonal fruit salad(80 baht). As you can tell I am a plain Jane when it comes to food(apart from the time I ate a scorpion on Khao San road that is) but the menu has lots of options for the more adventurous foodies. I love that part of what you pay for the meal goes to support development programmes and activities of the population and Community development Association(PDA). So eating here is not only an amusing and strangely interesting way to spend your evening sat admiring condom decorations and eating delicious food, but its for a good cause too.
There is indoor and outdoor seating options, with misty fans to keep you cool. we sat outside in the cosy fairy lit garden and soaked up the relaxed ambience. Sounds of the waterfall and light music can be heard in the background, it has quite a romantic feel. There was lots of couples but romance aside, lots of families even with young children(as bizarre as that may seem) and friends enjoying the evening. One little kid at the restuarnt kept blowing up condoms, I couldn’t help laugh and think that was all levels of wrong. As a little token, you are given complimentary condoms with your bill(mints are so last year). On your way out, stock up on all the freebie condoms, which come in a variety of sizes for those with mini and maxi you know what.
