Bali is a truly beautiful island and probably the most famous tourist destination in Indonesian. With beaches, surfing, hiking, diving, rugged coastlines, rice terraces, partying, dining and resorts its easy to see why. Having been to Bali twice now, and travelling in depth around Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud, the second time I wanted to see the much talked about Gili Trawangan.
Gili Trawangan or Gili T for short is all things paradise and more. Being only a short distant from Bali, this ideal island getaway should be at the top of your Bali bucket list. So for this post I will concentrate on Gili T because for me, its the best of Bali.
We only had one day and night to spend on Gili T as the boats going across were cancelled on the original day planned(damn stormy weather). So the next morning we were up bright and breezy to catch our fast boat across. There Is the option to get the public ferry across either, however they are super slow and time consuming. We got our Gili fast boat tickets from one of the ticket sellers along the street. There is literally ticket sellers every few steps you take on the streets , so no worries there. We had to get a ride to the pier at Padang Bai which was covered in the cost of the ticket. We used a company called Blue water Express and we choose the early morning boat(yes eager beavers). Tickets are not cheap but it is worth it, check out www.bluewater-express.com for exact timetables and pricelist.
Where to stay-
Without a shadow of a doubt, the nicest place to stay on Gili T is the Hotel Ombak Sunset. This 4 star hotel will make sure that your time on Gili T is nothing short of pure bliss. Its located on the west side of the island which is known to be more tranquil and peaceful. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted with the warmest smiles and free drinks, who doesn’t love a freebie drink?. They even gave us a free 3 course meal and wine that night at their Horizon restaurant with its stunning sea views as we had prepaid for our accommodation but had missed the first night due to the boat not going, which I thought was lovely gesture(serious brownie points). The accommodation itself is outstanding. We choose the deluxe terrace room and we were not disappointed. The décor with Balinese touch was to die for and the balcony with tropical garden views was fab. My favourite part of the accommodation(this is going to sound strange)was the bathroom. Its not just any ole bathroom , being an outdoor open air bathroom(oh I am a sucker for anything a little different). This was the first time I experienced an outdoor bathroom and I am all for it. There is something ridiculously soothing about having a shower outside(literally) and having the luxury of fresh air at the same time(I am a weirdo I know).
The Hotel Ombak Sunset is situated on a private beach that combines sea swings and sunsets to perfection and with its gorgeous 40m pool and swim up bar, its an all round winner for me.
What I love the most about Gili T-
From the moment I stepped off the boat into the electric blue waters and white sandy beach, I knew that this was my new favourite place in Bali and the place I would recommend people to go to. The true beauty of this island, is the fact that no form of motorised transport is allowed here(pollution free), which is just refreshing don’t you think? You can make your way round the island by bike or by cidomos(horse and cart). The island is quite small and will only take you one hour to do the full loop. From spas, diving, turtle heaven and being the go to party island of the three Gilis(Gili Air and Gili Meno) , you wont be short of things to do. Gili T is just a fabulous tropical chill place that everybody needs to experience once in their lifetime.
Everybody is different in what they look for in an island getaway and I can only speak for Gili T as I haven’t been to the other Gili islands YET. One thing I will say is they will have their work cut out for them to compete with my love for Gili T.
Have you been to any of the Gili Islands? What is the best place in Bali for you?
